Sydney is a very safe city that you can explore with lots of freedom. Like every city, personal safety and security is a matter of common sense and awareness. Here are a few tips for your personal safety:

• Call 000 if there is an emergency. Emergency services are for serious issues only, and you will incur a fine if you call them when it is not a real emergency.
• Always be more aware at night, especially when withdrawing money from ATMs or catching public transport. If you are carrying valuables, keep an eye on them.
• Avoid confrontation - it is better and safer to walk away if you are being provoked. If you feel you are being followed, cross the street, and if you are still worried, move as quickly as possible to a public area (such as a restaurant) and then ask or telephone for help.
• If you are going away, tell someone you trust where you are going and when you will be back
• Check the time of the last train or bus home to avoid being stranded at night.
• If travelling by taxi, note down the driver’s identification number displayed on the dashboard, in case you leave something behind or there is an issue.
• If your wallet is stolen, immediately cancel any credit cards, and report to the police.
• Make sure you’re aware of your rental agreements and obligations; be suspicious of cheap accommodation and scams.
• Weather in Sydney is unpredictable sometimes, so check the forecast and plan accordingly.
• Beaches in Australia are one of the main attractions to our beautiful country. Rough currents can be dangerous, if you are not a strong swimmer don’t go too far out, and always swim between the flags.
• If you are feeling unwell, consult medical help as soon as possible, don’t wait.
• In Australia, cars drive on the left side of the road, so always look right then left before crossing the road.

Safety on campus – Staff and student behaviour:
The College has rules about the way students and staff should behave towards you. If you feel at all uncomfortable about anyone’s behaviour towards you (either student or staff), it is important that you talk to a Student Services Officer (SSO) or your Trainer.
You can also talk to the Student Welfare Counsellor in private. See your SSO for arranging an appointment.
