ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (CRICOS CODE: 070208D)

The EAP course has been designed to provide students with ways and means to comprehend, question, evaluate and produce a range of discourses which are relevant to academic contexts. The course prepares students for entry into and successful participation in an Australian tertiary institution. The EAP curriculum has been designed to meet the specific language needs of students who enrol in vocational and academic courses at an Australian training institute or university. Two further objectives lie at the heart of English teaching at Cambridge College International. The first is to foster in students an enjoyment of language learning; the second is to provide an awareness and appreciation of the diverse heritage and cultural richness Australia's population.

Entry level requirement: Upper-Intermediate level/IELTS 5.5

From 4 to 12 weeks

Assessment is an ongoing procedure within the course. It is a combination of formative and summative testing. Students are encouraged to produce examples of different kinds of writing throughout the course and to organise this work into a student portfolio. In addition, students are also encouraged to keep a learning journal which operates as a tool for reflection throughout the course. Students are assessed on their oral presentation skills, their ability to participate in a group (tutorial) discussion, the essay construction techniques, various essays and assignments, reading and listening skills.

As the ultimate aim of the EAP course is to prepare students for their academic studies in higher education, instruction focuses on the academic skills needed to accomplish certain tasks set by the students’ future studies. Therefore, the EAP course integrates different ELT approaches, which lead to innovative teaching methodologies, rather than focusing on the four skills in isolation.

Learners who successfully meet the criteria to complete the EAP Course may be eligible for direct entry into university or vocational courses.

EAP can also provide a strong foundation for students prior to undertaking the IELTS exam Preparation course. For students who find IELTS preparation too difficult, the EAP course can strengthen their skills needed to undertake IELTS Preparation.
